SEO SEM Strategy: What Things Do You Need to Consider?

by Joel House

When handling your website, one of the crucial things to take time for is looking into your SEO tactics and ideas.

It’s a wonderful thing to do; however, not all blogs or businesses do this.

[Host blogger’s comment: A blogging friend recently made an observation which surprised me. He maintained getting to the top of Google’s Page 1 is easy since so few bloggers and businesses are optimizing their websites for search engines.]

Unfortunately, by focusing on content, promotion, and networking, we forget to develop our SEO SEM strategies.

All SEO SEM strategies are, and should be, different. There are underlying strategies on how you can develop SEO SEM strategies! But how do you do so?

Read on as I talk about the things you need to consider when creating an effective SEO SEM strategy.

Check out the five important things that all SEO SEM strategies need:

  • Mind Maps

Unusual SEO SEM strategies

A mind map is an area where you can build your SEO strategy from the ground up. It branches different categories that usually come from the center and move from general to specific things. That way, your ideas become more precise and specific.

This isn’t the visualization of the final SEO strategy. It isn’t also part of the way you present your plan. Rather, it’s what can help you think about what to add or improve on.

Mind maps are tools that would contribute to envisioning the thinking process. It would make it easier to combine ideas and create it into one whole. That way, you reduce the load of your strategy, so you are able to focus more on the brainstorming.

Basically, with a mind map, you see all ideas at once in an understandable structure. You can use different tools online or jot down your own mind map.

  • Visual Representation

When your mind map is complete and you now have a concrete strategy, then you’re going to develop your draft.

Remember, a strategy is a PLAN, which should come with goals and specific tasks that match your goals, and other general-to -specific tasks that arise as time goes by.

If you follow the mind map, your content will be easier and quicker to draft.

Also, it should be done in a simple format for you to understand or edit if needed.

There are different tools and software you can use when going from the mind map to draft.

For example, you can have a bullet journal notebook just for your mind map. Many bloggers use bullet journals to jot their blog post ideas before typing a draft.

Some of the aspects of your plan could include:

  • Your tasks
  • What comes after each task
  • Which tasks are planned, in progress, recurring, and already finished

  • Understand your website

To create the best SEO strategy, you must have a solid understanding of what your website is all about. By understanding the company’s mission and goals, it will make your strategies successful.

[Host blogger’s comments: Do you have a tagline? Does it state what your website is all about? Reading your tagline is a great place to start in figuring out your mission and goals. Many bloggers actually have a mission statement on their blogs. Do you see my tagline at the top? It states my blog’s mission is to offer practical solutions and established strategies that will make a difference.]

Because of this, you’ll need to know your strengths to leverage so you can get the most SEO value.

Here are the crucial factors to consider when developing an SEO SEM strategy:

What makes your blog or business different?

Whether it’s a series of services or products, you need to know the uniqueness of your website for your SEO SEM strategies to work. That way, your SEO SEM plan has direction.

For example, you’ll know which influencers to contact, which audience to target, and which keywords to track.

Your website’s vision

When you make your SEO SEM plan, just knowing your content niche isn’t enough.

Look at your vision statement, your tagline, which will help guide you when creating your strategic goals and its metrics.

What do you need to improve one?

Understand what you need and what you are unable to do before committing to creating strategies.

  • Understanding the Audience

Just like knowing the company, you will also need to understand who your target audience is and what they should be expected to do when visiting your website.

Here are some hints to determine when learning about your audience:

Level of knowledge

Will you be writing for people who know the subject you’re talking about or are they unable to understand your niche’s jargons?

Closeness to the niche

Are your audiences consumers or businesses? Are they already familiar with your niche or do they not understand or know much of it?

Their acceptance of marketing

Make sure that the way you or your company sells your services or products is accepting to your readers, as some may be too sensitive to promotions.

You can get this information by surveying your readers themselves and browsing relevant social media websites.

  • Precise Goals

To achieve your goals and make them useful, they have to be precise. To make them precise, I recommend that you focus on the working parts, as well as the way it fits together rather than focus on the monetary amounts.

A strategy or plan is all about achieving goals. The results will impact your website’s future. So make sure that the metrics reflect your goals. Whether you want to focus more on links and authority or more rankings and organic search, that depends on you.

I recommend that you value task-oriented goals over your KPI (key performance indicators) goals. Live up to your goals, measure its impact, then adjust your strategy as needed. That way, you’ll learn a lot and find ways to optimize SEO.

Wrapping It Up

You shouldn’t only find SEO strategies from the Internet and hope for the best! It’s also recommended to create your own tailored to your website’s needs and goals. All SEO strategies created and followed can benefit when you focus on the important aspects of building one.

I hope that this article on what to consider when building SEO strategies helped you find a way to become better with your business. So don’t wait any longer and implement these elements into your framework, making it a part of how you do your business today!

  1. The Curious Frugal

Having a plan is so important. When I first started blogging, I didn’t have one, I was just writing. Since I became more intentional and focused I’ve started to see pageviews increase.

      Hi Curious!
Thanks for writing me. I’m glad you agree with the importance of a plan. I think my guest author’s plan is an interesting one. I know it gave me much to think about.

SEO and SEM are two friends that can go without the other, but if they go together, they could go further. I think one thing that your guest blogger forgot to mention is about proper keyword researcher. Often do bloggers write and write and write about things that they want to write about but if no one is interested or searching for what they are writing, no one will see it. SEO and SEM relies heavily on proper keyword research and you can see it very clearly if you have a Google Adwords account. That’s just my two cents.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Adrian,
I like your metaphor about the friends that can be together or apart. I thought Joel mentioned optimization but perhaps it should have been given more of a focus. At any rate, I thought his plan was intriguing. Thank you for commenting.

Google is forcing to implement HTTPS.

As an AdWords advertiser, should I make the changes in URLs to HTTPS?

  4. DizzyWeb

I find mind maps to be very useful. They give you a visual to reference so that you don’t get stuck with the “what the heck are we doing this task for?” question. That particular question sometimes arises out of frustration when roadblocks to specific task appear. With the mind map it is easier to keep clear about where and why and how an individual task fits within the project.
    Thanks for the article

    • Janice Wald

I don’t actually use mind maps. I am a teacher and I do use them with my students. Which tool do you use to make your mind maps for blogging or do you do it on paper?. Thank you for contributing to the discussion.
