 6 free social bookmarking sites

Are you using free social bookmarking sites as a form of blog promotion?

If you haven’t heard the term, you may be more familiar with social bookmarking sites than you think.

This post will explain what social bookmarking is and how you can use six free social bookmarking sites to conduct research for your blog posts, find quality backlinks, like-minded bloggers, increase traffic, and monetize.

Free Social Bookmarking Sites

by Prazwal Mahajan

Have you ever sent a link which you found exciting to a pal or member of the family? If yes, you have already participated in bookmarking.

But what is bookmarking anyway?

Bookmarking is a type of saving a page which seems interesting to you for further reference so that we can access it easily.

For example: While reading a book, we use bookmarks to remember where we left reading. We usually put a small cardboard, sticky notes, and other bookmarks. This process is called bookmarking.

Social bookmarking.

Inside the era of the internet, the Kindle has taken over novels and diary writing has emerged as weblog writing. We often deal with all sorts of links such as links in email and websites’ hyperlinks.

In any case, it’s now not like you may take a small piece of cardboard or a sticky note and boldly position it on an internet page the way you may do with the pages in an actual book.

You can think about social bookmarking like tagging or saving an internet page with a web tool so that you can get entry to it later without any problem. In place of saving them in your internet browser, you’re saving them to the internet. And, because your bookmarks are online, you can get access to them from anywhere where you have a web connection.

Advantages of Social Bookmarking

Value of free social bookmarking sites:

1. Ease of access.

The one great advantage social bookmarking has is the ease of use compared to a browser. The question might arise in your mind:

‘Why use social bookmarking when we can search for the link through a browser?’

The answer is Searching from a browser is like finding a needle in hay. Every day millions of articles are written, the ranking of the articles are never the same. Today articles appearing on Page 1 might be outranked and thrown out of the race. This is where social bookmarking comes in handy: we can reach all the information just logging into our accounts.

2. A high-quality backlink.

When you submit your website to a Social Bookmarking Site and successfully verify the ownership of it, you get a High-Quality Backlink from the site. Usually, the backlinks are do follow backlinks.

A backlink from a site with DA (Domain Authority) and PA (Page Authority) could have many benefits for you. It might rank you higher, improve your Alexa ranking, and might improve your Google page rank.

3. Finding other bloggers of your niche.

Social bookmarking can help you find your fellow bloggers which are from the same niche. It is very difficult to find like-minded bloggers on social media platforms but the platform of social bookmarking is mostly used by blog owners to publicize their content.

It is a great platform for meeting new people, you can ask for favors like guest posting and help with the issues you are facing. This may be the point of difference in your today and tomorrow.

4. Stay updated.

Social bookmarking sites contain tons of new information every day, ranging from SEO to image optimization and much more. These pages are usually updated with the latest releases, new trends, and new algorithm updates.

A blogger needs to be updated, Blogging about the current issues would bring tons of traffic and another topic might bring none.

5. Increased traffic and faster indexing.

The number of shares of your post in social bookmarking sites is directly proportional to the increase in the traffic and the traffic is of high quality which means increased revenue.

The good qualities of backlinks also help in fast indexing of your blog post and increase the ranking of your keywords.

Various social bookmarking sites:

Curation and bookmarking: What’s the difference?

Bookmarking is or was an early form of content curation. It is a basic level or starting level of curation powered by social media platforms and social bookmarking sites.

Whereas Content Curation is at a higher level, it doesn’t include sharing of random or interesting links but it includes carefully monitoring and selecting the most relevant bits of information for a specific audience, topic, or need.

For example: creating content that is topic-specific such as content about Nike Air Max in the shoe section.

Conclusion: Free Social Bookmarking Sites

Free social bookmarking sites can be an asset for bloggers but watch for these things:

Don’t submit links on low social bookmarking sites; it does more harm than good.

Don’t create too many links; it will fall under Black Hat SEO.

Rest assured it is a great tool for generating traffic, backlinks, and fast indexing.

Happy blogging.

Host Blogger’s Comments:

In closing, using free social bookmarking sites is a great way to experience more success as a blogger.

For example, using social bookmarking sites is considered an off-page SEO technique. By going to another site for a link back to yours, you are boosting your own site’s SEO.

The Easykhoj blog agrees using social bookmarking sites will boost your search engine rankings and calls this method “another of the more powerful ways to promote your website. This method can help us to get more backlinks from high authority domains.”

In addition, you could meet like-minded bloggers at those sites as well as get a new audience for your articles. That increase in traffic could lead to increased revenue for you as Prazwal explained.

Problogger agrees social bookmarking sites are a valuable form of blog promotion. “More and more bloggers are discovering that becoming involved in social bookmarking and networking websites can be very beneficial for raising the profile of their blogs and themselves as bloggers.”

Readers, please share so other bloggers know about these free social bookmarking sites.

Are you using any of these free social bookmarking sites? Are there some you’d recommend more than the others? I look forward to reading about your experiences in the comments section.

  1. Lorna

I was recently added to someone’s scoop page thing and got a weird little traffic spike from it. I knew you’d know what it was, ha!

    • Prazwal

The traffic spikes may not last for more than a week if you share more often the spike in traffic would be even and high quality traffic.

  2. Ryan Biddulph

    Hi Prazwal,

Thanks for the Reddit reminder; I forgot to bookmark my blog post there on Monday, when a neat little thread gets going and I get to network with some rocking bloggers.

I have used each site on this list at some time during my blogger career. All pretty solid. I have not much activity on Delicious in a minute but if it is noted, I reckon it is still in use.

As with any social site, if you share other blogger’s content freely, steady traffic will flow your way too.

You really go get what you choose to give, in any area of life but especially on social media, and with social bookmarking.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Ryan

    • Janice Wald

Is there a sub Reddit with traction on Mondays you can recommend? Thanks!
      Janice

      • Ryan Biddulph

It’s under the Blogging Thread – just search for “blogging” – then you will see Weekly Blogging Discussion/Check Out My Blog Post.

    • Prazwal

You are right if you can find appropriate sub Reddit and your post is having fair upvotes then you are going to have 2k+ users right now.
If you share others content they will share yours that how it work.

  3. Robin Khokhar

    HI Janice,
A very well crafted post. But I must tell you that delicious is not accepting any submission these days. Looks like delicious is bought by pinboard now and accept no submissions.
But I must tell you that the other websites you have shared are really good and are a good help.
    Thanks for the amazing share.

  4. P V Ariel

Scoop it was one of my favs.
Need to have fresh look again.
Thanks, Janice and Mahajan for this post.
    Keep sharing
Habe a great time of sharing ahead.
    Best
    ~ Philip

    • Prazwal

Thanks PV Ariel. Scoop is also a good site but don’t ignore Pinterest and Reddit if you get one of your pin or post viral then you won’t be able to handle the traffic and nice to meet you.

  7. BISWAJIT SAHA

    Hi Janice,
I will definitely suggest these social bookmarking sites for all newbie bloggers.
    Thanks for sharing.

  8. Moss

    Hi Prazwal & Janice,

Your article is very interesting and informative, I love it. The bookmarking sites are all great, if not for the Delicious that which Robin said is no longer accepting submissions.

However, I was hoping to see LinkedIn among the sites list, because LinkedIn is considered, or better still has the reputation of being the most “professional” of the social media sites.

So, when you consistently publish your articles on the LinkedIn publishing platform, you’re effectively creating an excellent way to get noticed and build your brand.

You will attract more connections and new clients.

Thank you so much for sharing!

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Moss,
Thanks for your idea. I published a new article on LinkedIn long ago and nothing came of it. Or, are you suggesting we share the posts we publish on our blogs on LinkedIn? I do this routinely but don’t find much traffic from the site although I do get a little. Thanks for writing.
      Janice

      • Moss

        Hi Janice & Prazwal,

Nice to be here again. Here’s my take on the subject. Your list of social bookmarking sites are amazing. But then LinkedIn when used correctly is also a terrific bookmarking site.

The fact is when you post to LinkedIn with publisher, it makes your content searchable by keyword in LinkedIn’s post search box no matter your industry.

LinkedIn publisher offers you an avenue to bring your knowledge and expertise in any given area to light.

A big part of content marketing is to showcase your knowledge and expertise, and that’s what LinkedIn publisher can do for you.

When you publish articles on LinkedIn publisher platform, you post becomes visible to your connections just like on Facebook.

The more views you get, the more increased visibility which might result in your article being picked by LinkedIn newsreader – Pulse. When this happens, you get remarkable views and comments.

What’s important is for you to know the key elements of a stunning post. They’re just the same as they are for your blog.

An Irresistible Headline, High-quality images, Compelling content, Keywords and a fascinating marketing plan.

Articles related to influencer marketing, LinkedIn Influencer and similar posts on that field perform well.

I got a client from LinkedIn simply because he read my article about Email Marketing that was published via LinkedIn publisher. However, I’ve not been publishing lately over 2 months now because my site is down. Once up I get back to publishing on LinkedIn publisher.

I suggest you publish your blog posts on LinkedIn publisher. But please, choose your posting frequency. LinkedIn is a professional site – not Twitter or Facebook where you post randomly. Post at least once a week.

Just as you might not have gotten traction on LinkedIn, same thing can happen to anyone on other sites.

For example, I do not get traction from Facebook, you shouldn’t be surprised but it’s a fact.

Maybe I should just write a post on than. You just gave me a post idea.

        Thanks so much!

        • Janice Wald

          Hi Moss,
Thank you for writing us such detailed comments. I’d like to respond to the end of your comments.
You mentioned not getting traction from Facebook which does surprise me. Facebook is my Number #1 referrer of social traffic. Since you and I write about the same topics, I’d expect us to have the same amount of traction at the various social media sites.
However, you and I have had opposite experiences. I find almost no traction from LinkedIn where you find success, and you find no traction from Facebook where I have felt successful.
Yes, if you have an explanation, I’d love to read a post on that. Feel free to use my comments to you here if you’d like. Might make a nice introduction.
          Janice

    • Prazwal

Hey moss you are right delicious is not accepting. But the LinkedIn is used for far more professional basis and the blogger post doesn’t grab attention. The article do well there are the affect of xyz on economy of world etc. I have used LinkedIn and it didn’t work for me

  9. Pedro

    Hi Prazwal; Hey Janice,

Great article! Thanks for sharing. Bookmarking sites are also great places to network, connect with and support other bloggers. As I have always said, content may be key, but connection is key. When we share and promote other bloggers, it definitely comes back to us one way or another.
I have never used Digg, and I am definitely going to give it a try, thanks to you 🙂

    Best regards,

    Pedro

    • Prazwal

Absolutely true once your post get social signals. Google move it up in the ranking and you would get organic traffic too. Digg is a nice platform and it is worth for your time

  10. Ahmad Imran

Prazwal, good selection of top players in the social bookmarking arena. I was wondering that Flipboard is not included in the list. Do you think it is of standard and quality that it deserves to be in the top 6?

    Ahmad

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Ahmad,
I have written the author and told him you have a question about his post. As far as I go, I am a huge fan of Flipboard!
      Janice

    • Prazwal

Hey Ahmed, you are right Flipboard is also a kind of a social Bookmarking sites but it’s more of a online magazine as far I know so it didn’t make the list. It collect contact and show it in form of magazine.
I hope it clears your doubt.

  11. Ashutosh singh

    Ashutosh

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Ashutosh,
I was excited to read your comments. I get links from Pinterest and Quora. People write me and ask how I do it, so clearly these are valuable links. Easy! I promote at Pinterest and answer questions at Quora.
Thanks for writing with the validation that this post is helpful for many reasons.
      Janice

      Your BBFFJ

  13. Lisa Sicard

Hi Prazwal – I like Scoop it and Pinterest the most out of these sites. I do want to do more on Reddit and just got my password back and did a little a few weeks ago. I’m not a big fan of Digg or StumbleUpon as they always increased my bounce rates significantly.
Thanks for the info and tips here 🙂

  14. mehedi hasan

I have used each site on this list at some time during my blogger career. All pretty solid. I have not much activity on Delicious in a minute but if it is noted, I reckon it is still in use.
As with any social site, if you share other blogger’s content freely, steady traffic will flow your way too.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Mehedi,
As you know, this was a guest post. I have not had luck with directories like Delicious, but the other social bookmarking sites I’m happy to say I’ve received traffic from.
      Janice

  15. Qi Bug

Wow, this is a great article. Now I could understand the need of social bookmarking to increase my website visibility on the eye of search engine such as Google. I’ll try up the suggestions on this article later. Thank you again.

  16. SaraBeth

    Hi, Janice and Prazwal.
I use Pinterest and StumbleUpon as bookmarking sites. I used to use Scoop-it more when I was a crochet blogger.
It’s tough trying to manage it all so I limit what I use.
Do you find the benefits of bookmarking sites outweigh the higher bounce rate?
According to GA, my biggest referrer is SU but of course, most people don’t stay long enough. So although I still like it, I’m cutting back a bit to see if I can decrease the bounce rate.

  17. DNN

Scoop.it is an awesome service. But they want you to pretty much pay today in order to save and share your content there. I would stick to the other services if you personally ask me. 🙂

    P.S. Don’t forget FlipBoard.com too! 🙂

    • Janice Wald

I love Flipboard! I plan on blogging about Flipboard again in the next few months. Thanks for writing.
      Janice

    • Janice Wald

Either way, I share my posts on scoop.it and don’t pay anything.
      Janice

    • Janice Wald

My pleasure. I’m sorry I didn’t respond sooner. This ended up in the spam folder.
      Janice

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Mona,
I agree with you. You make a strong case for using social bookmarking sites.
