Have You Got What It Takes? 5 Things All Bloggers Should Have

This post was contributed.

Starting your own blog or online business is quite a commitment, but seeing it through with persistence and determination, that’s a whole different ball game. From the outside looking in, it can appear that blogging or being a digital entrepreneur is simply a case of sitting down at a laptop and writing about whatever you feel like.

The truth is, it might look straightforward, but there’s so much more to blogging or being a digital entrepreneur than meets the eye. Want to know if you’ve got what it takes? Read on to discover 5 things all bloggers and digital entrepreneurs should have.

5 Entrepreneurial Values People Online Need

An eye for detail

Blogging or running an online business requires an eye for detail, and that means excellent spelling and grammar and accurate citations, referencing and quotes – discover this handy tool for checking in-text citations by clicking the link.  As well as well-structured posts, clarity and choosing relevant, attractive images and graphics that compliment your work.

Great writing skills

You won’t get very far without this skill. Having said that, you don’t need to have a degree in English or even lots of writing experience to make it as a blogger or digital entrepreneur.

Many bloggers and online business owners find that their writing style and their skills develop the more they write. If you want your readers to stick around and subscribe, then you’ll need to be conscious of maturing as a writer and keeping your readers engaged with well written content. As long as you have a passion for writing and enjoy it, then you should enjoy being a blogger or digital entrepreneur.

Sometimes the hardest thing in the world is to sit down and do the task you need to do. We always find ways to distract ourselves from work, chores or other tasks that take time and concentration. This is where the entrepreneurial value discipline comes in.

To write a successful blog, you’ll need to post consistently and prove to be a reliable source of entertainment/advice for your readers. As a result, you need to have the discipline to sit and write to meet your deadlines, block out any distractions and get on with your work… it’s not as easy as it sounds.

A strong work ethic

As mentioned above, being a blogger or digital entrepreneur is more demanding than meets the eye. And in order to reach new readers and retain them as well, you need to work hard and dedicate a lot of time to the success of your blog.

That means interesting content that is well written, as well as high quality photographs, developing a good, user friendly blog that is easy to navigate, keeping on top of all your social media and being able to communicate with your readers and respond to comments and queries.

If your blog is successful, then you may find yourself working with some brands or third party businesses, which requires even more hard work on your part.

As far as blogging or running an online business goes, success doesn’t happen overnight.

The bloggers you know who have turned their blog into a lucrative source of income have most likely been blogging for a number of years and have worked hard and persistently to get where they are today. Be patient like they are, and you might just have what it takes.

      Hi Bella,
Thank you for commenting on my post. I agree with your suggestions for things all bloggers should have including entrepreneurial values such as hard work. My guest author didn’t mention graphics. I agree they are eye-catching especially at Pinterest or linky parties where there are a lot of graphics.
Regarding coming up with good content: I recommend Google Trends, Alexa.com, and Twitter Trends for ideas.

These are exceptional! A strong work ethic really comes a long way. Sprinkled with a lot of patience and discipline, certainly, an entrepreneur is bound to succeed. When I started to work with my blog, it was challenging for me but I taught myself to learn new things and spent time to talk to mentors. I’m still working on writing better content as months go by. Thanks for sharing your incredible insights!

      Hi Bertina,
Thanks for the compliments on my post. The actions of people with a strong work ethic you described are spot on. I agree they accurately describe entrepreneurs.
Congratulations on all your progress. Thanks for sharing and commenting.

      Hi Joe,
      Great to see you!
I reviewed the post to see if the guest author listed “patience” as one of the entrepreneurial values needed for success. Sure enough it was!
I’m glad you agree with the guest author. I agree as well. Too many bloggers, for example, abandon their blogs after 9 months. Stick it out, people!
Google, for example, rewards older blogs with visibility. I like your comments– “the 2 P’s!.” Both patience and preparation are needed for blogging success.
