business ideas for women

Business ideas for women are hard to find.

As a result, women looking to monetize are limited to making money by performing menial tasks instead of starting a business.

For example, women get paid for losing weight, stuffing envelopes, and they make money by playing games.

At the time of this writing, according to KWFinder, a keyword research tool, there are over 8.000 searches for the term “business ideas for women” per month and very little online competition for readership.

At Quora.com, the question and answer site, the answer to “What are some profitable business ideas for women? has over 700 views.

Women are searching for answers with little information available to them on the internet.

That ends here.

This post offers 20 business ideas for women.

These small business ideas for women won’t even require you to leave the house. They all allow you to physically work in the comfort of your home or do remote jobs on the computer and work online from home.

It gets better: You’ll find all or most of these jobs pay well.

Many articles offering business ideas for women tell women to ask themselves the “5 W’s”:

What are you excel at doing?

What do you enjoy doing?

These are not necessarily the same answers. Many people enjoy doing activities they don’t feel successful in. Conversely, people may be successful at activities they don’t relish engaging in.

Who would you like to work with?

“No one” is an option.

Where would you like to work?

Feel free to answer “at home.” Many of the tips in this post suggest home business ideas.

Why do you want to work?

I realize “money” is the obvious answer. However, “to change the world” is a far different motivator than “to get out of the house.”

These business ideas are listed alphabetically for your convenience.

20 Small Business Ideas for Women

Accountant

Rima, a relative of mine, is an accountant. She never leaves her home to do her job.

People either go to her home or mail her their tax documents.

Rima makes so much money as an accountant, she routinely travels all over the world and still has been able to save a large sum of money to leave her children in her will.

My accountant also works remotely. We used to have an April tradition: My daughters, my husband, and I use to go to the accountant, give him our tax document, and then go out to lunch afterwards.

While my husband and I still make our annual trip to our account, my adult daughters simply mail him their tax documents. Any questions for them he might have get answered on the phone.

Note: Since tax information can often be found online, people can merely forward their information to their account or use email instead of mail that gets sent through the post office.

Affiliate Marketer

I asked affiliate marketers on Quora.com how much they make. The answers I received range from $5,000 to $50,000.

Several reported making $10,000 per month, which would give you a 6-figure yearly income.

A popular form of affiliate marketing for bloggers is to become an Amazon affiliate. Bloggers put Amazon ads on their site. When people click, the blogger makes money. This is a form of Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising.

Blogger

You can be a blogger like Heather Armstrong.

Blogger Heather Armstrong is a Mommy Blogger.

Heather’s site Dooce rose to fame quickly. How much fame? We’re talking the stratosphere.

According to the Vox, Heather’s blog was making $40,000 a month in banner ads.

Then talk-show host Oprah Winfrey interviewed Heather on her show.

Vox reports in 2009,
“Forbes named Armstrong one of its 30 most influential women in media, alongside Oprah, Arianna Huffington, and Tyra Banks. The New York Times Magazine crowned her the ‘queen of the mommy bloggers.’

Heather’s Mommy blog was adored by readers who loved her “tell-it-like-it-is” style.

How to Earn Money as a Blogger

Bloggers earn money online in many ways. For example, you can make money with your landing pages.

Consultant

I serve as a blogging consultant. Consulting is one of my income streams. It’s important you have varied income streams.

As a consultant, I offer many different consulting services for bloggers.

My most popular are my SEO services in which I teach people how to get traffic from search engines and my monetization service in which I teach people how to make money blogging.

Good news: It’s easier for your static pages to rank on Google than your blog posts. I have separate pages for my freelance writing service and my blog coaching services.

Ebook Author

You can combine your blog posts into an ebook. This is a great time-saving tip since the posts are already written.

In addition, you can compose an ebook about your experiences and inspire people to do what you’ve done. Whether you’ve overcome adversity to become a successful blogger or successfully changed careers midlife, I’m sure you have a great deal to share that could inspire others.

Freelance Writer

Some of you may know that I’m a freelance writer. I monetize this way.

Being a freelance writer is tantamount to hanging out a shingle.

Your need to let people know your services are available.

How to find a job as a freelance writer

  • Put a static page on your blog advertising your writing services. If you’d like to see an example, here is my Freelance Writer for Hire page. Not only do people who come to my website see that my writing services are available, but this page gets indexed by Google. Static pages have an easier time rising to the top of Google’s SERPs than blog posts.
  • My blog monetization resource, available on Amazon, explains where to find places to write. Many pay $100 an article.
  • Offer your services at an agency like Fiverr or Upwork.

Blogger Carol Tice makes a full-time living as a freelance writer.

When I started blogging, I heard that of all the blog monetization methods, freelancing is the most lucrative. My experience proves this to be true.

Graphic Designer

People start businesses designing graphics for use on the web.

These could include everything from logos to Pinterest pins to banner advertisements.

Blogger Beth McIntire monetizes by designing graphics for people.

Life Coach

Before the Digital Age, life coaches used to go prisons, rehabilitation centers, and other places to provide life coaching.

Today, people don’t need to travel. They hold webinars, make YouTube videos, and video conference.

Online Salesperson

Years ago, people would throw in-home parties. Women would come and listen to a direct salesperson talk about the joys of a product. The Avon lady who sold makeup is an example.

While parties like these may still exist, they are no longer necessary thanks to online catalogs.

Instead of hosting Avon ladies and women in need of cosmetics in your home, you could sell makeup online.

You could even show women how to get free makeup samples online which you’ll have access to since you’ll be the makeup company’s representative. Then, you’ll certainly have a built-in, engaged audience.

Photographer

When I went to Europe several years ago, I had every intention of selling my travel photos on a membership site.

I never did but you could.

I learned of this monetization idea from a reader. Long ago, he was impressed with my blog photo and suggested I consider selling my photos online.

Sites ask for a membership fee upfront, but you get to keep the rest.

Note: At sites like Flickr.com, you could ask for a link to your site instead of money. This would boost your SEO which leads to traffic and ultimately sales for you.

Proofreader

Thanks to Google Docs, all people need to do is share their Google Doc with you for you to proofread it online.

Provide In-home Childcare

In May of 2019, radio station KNX1070 reported that my state of California has among the worst childcare in the nation which shows the need for excellent childcare.

My former piano teacher provided childcare in her home and gave in-home piano lessons as well.

Run an Online Store

My guest author describes seven eMarketing hacks designed to get customers to buy your products online.

It’s true! You can open an online store on a budget.

If you’d like to open an online store, but you don’t know what to sell, click the link of my post, “Thinking of Opening an Online Store? Read This First,” and scroll down to the comments section. Commenters have great ideas for online stores.

Sell on Amazon

The best way to make money this way is by becoming an Amazon reseller and join Amazon’s FBA program (Fulfilled By Amazon.).

My friend’s son is a millionaire today since he makes a sizeable income through this form of monetization.

The way you become an Amazon reseller is simple enough.

You find products people would want to buy. You buy the products first at a discount and then sell them for a profit.

Free tools let you know which products are in demand that would generate an income for you.

When you join the Amazon FBA program, Amazon takes care of everything for you such as the shipping and any customer complaints.

Sell on Etsy

The people on Etsy sell crafts.

If you are a DIY blogger, perhaps you’ll consider selling your homemade crafts on Etsy.

Social Media Consultant

You already have experience doing the tasks of a social media manager since you promote your blog posts on social media.

To put it simply, a social media manager is responsible for brand awareness. You already promote your own brand and can easily promote other people by being a social media consultant.

The best part: becoming a social media consultant or manager would generate residual income for you. This is not a one-time-only job. Your specific skill set would be needed again and again.

Teach an Online Course

Many students take classes online. If you’re wondering what you’d teach about, consider teaching at Udemy. Udemy offers classes for bloggers.

You certainly know how blog and could teach others how to do that. Udemy even trains you to write a course and then sell it.

Transcriptionist

Someone mails you an audio tape and you get paid for typing what you hear. Nice and easy!

Virtual Assistant

A virtual assistant (VA) can help with a wider range of tasks than a social media manager.

For example, when I reviewed Jill’s Office, a VA service, I was given a Virtual Assistant for a month for free. She made phone calls for me. A virtual assistant takes care of clerical tasks and is an all-purpose helper.

I currently have a VA assisting me. While she posts to my Pinterest board for me which would qualify her as a social media manager, she also adds bloggers to my Link Exchange and rewards my optins in other ways as well.

Web Designer

In addition to being my technical helper, Phillip Dews is my web designer.

The more serious bloggers are going to want custom themes so the look of their blog is unique and not canned. They don’t feel it’s professional to look like other bloggers.

You can demand a hefty sum for designing templates for blogs.

Wrapping Up: Small Business Ideas for Women

In closing, don’t feel like you need to just pick one of these small business ideas for women. You can choose as many as you have time to do.

Bloggers should have more than one income stream. For example, you could write an ebook in the evenings and provide in-home childcare during the day.

These business ideas for women are convenient since you don’t have to leave the home and pay handsomely.

Readers, did I skip any? Can you suggest any business ideas for women?

    Hi Janice,

Wow, what a great list for those who want to do their own business. Today there are so many options, because of the internet. But we can’t forget the off line businesses also. When you list them like you have done here, the possibilities are endless.

Because I’m all set up with my online business, I recently wanted a side hustle that would be like a hobby for me. I love clothes and put some of mine up on Parshmark. Well five hundred bucks later, I got into it a little more. Now I do some buying at yard sales (another pastime for me lol) and selling at a great profit. Once set up, it is as easy as pie because I enjoy it. So Two lines of monetization on the internet for me lol.

      Hi Donna,
I did not know that you have a side-line selling clothes for a profit. What a great idea! Thanks for contributing to the conversation by letting us know. People might want to start that business.
Great to see you. Thanks again for your support on Facebook.

      Hi Martin,
Well, I used to babysit. I think pet sitting would be even easier! Unfortunately, I used to have a sever cat allergy. Dog sitting, perhaps? Thanks for commenting, here and at BizSugar. I wrote you back there as well.

      Hi Lesly!
Great to see you here! I’m so glad you like my business ideas for women. With a list of as many as 20 business ideas, hopefully, people will find at least one idea. I do three of these– I’m a paid blogger, ebook author, and freelance writer. Thanks for commenting.
      Janice
