5 Techniques That Never Fail to Bring Blog Subscribers

The real currency in the blogging world isn’t the number of visitors per month, but the loyal subscribers you have. That’s why you need to bring blog subscribers every day.

 

Many bloggers struggle to drive consistent traffic to their blogs. And when they figure out the power of growing an email list, they fail at getting visitors to sign up.

 

It is not a lack of available options for how to do so. In fact, there is this list here that includes more than 101 ways to bring in more subscribers.

 

It’s all good, except that not all those techniques actually work. And those that do, may not fit your blog.

 

So the question remains: how to get more blog subscribers?

 

In this article; you’ll get the proven techniques that actually work all the time. All you have to do is apply them and watch your email blog subscribers’ number grow.

Technique #1: Produce High-Quality Content On Your Blog

Now, the most important thing that bloggers forget about when they are growing their email lists is the quality of the content they publish.

 

Let me be clear…

 

Subscribers sign up because they want to see more of your HIGH-QUALITY content.

 

If you aren’t giving them that without a subscription on a frequent basis, they won’t trust your newsletter to be anything more valuable.

 

Therefore, the first thing to worry about when you are not seeing large numbers of subscribers is the quality you produce. You want your readers to always come back for more “good stuff” and not close your time a second after they land on it.

 

But don’t worry, there are many ways to make your content stand out. You can start by writing ultimate guides, step-by-step tutorials, case studies, and more.

 

When a visitor finds your blog posts valuable, they’ll want to get alerts for more great content.

 

Also, don’t forget a relevant CTA with your blog posts. I’ll mention this twice more in the article just so you don’t forget about it.

Technique #2: Make Your Emails Worth The Subscription

You don’t only need great content on your blog, but even greater content in their newsletter.

 

To convince a new blog visitor to subscribe to your email list, you need to offer a valuable return.

Usually, when you read blog posts about growing your list of subscribers, they always mention freebies in form of ebooks, email courses, and much more.

 

But if you come down to it; it’s all about giving your loyal subscribers even more valuable content than what is on your blog. There are hundreds of ways to do so, but the important part is to do it.

 

Find out what your audience needs the most and give it away in return for an email sign up. You can go from “0 to 100 real quick”. Actually, I’ve gone from 0 to 250 in no time when I published an SEO Resource Guide Book even before I had content on my blog.

How I gained these subscribers? That’s where the next tip comes in.

Technique #3: Be Active On Relevant Forums

I mention social media a lot when I talk about getting free and relevant traffic to your blog. (You can read about that here, or read this one by Iyiola Owabumowa on Janice’s blog. All great content if you are looking for more traffic.)

 

What I don’t mention a lot is how these forums are a special place for gaining blog subscribers as well.

 

I have been active in a White Hat SEO Facebook group for several months. I’ve asked and answered quite a lot of questions, enough to be on the list of the most active members for 3 months.

 

So when I asked if anyone is interested in a free ebook that includes more than 100 links to the best articles about advanced SEO while it explains the very basics, more than 130 people said YES in the first 24 hours.

How to increase blog subscribers

 

When I published it on my blog and sent the group members to the landing page, almost all of them subscribed to the email list with double opt-in.

 

I also answered a few questions on Quora and received more subscribers.

 

Remember: I had literally NO CONTENT on the blog except the landing page. 150 Subscribers is a pretty good number if you ask me.

 

Moral of the story: offer as much value as you can, when you can, where you can. Your email list will grow immensely like that.

Technique #4: Keep It Simple, and Friendly

Way more often than not, I land on blogs with intrusive pop-ups and welcoming mats that hide the content and are almost impossible to close.

 

Even more annoying are those with a second sign-up request after you said ‘no’ to the first one.

 

And yet more enraging are those with rude suggestions accompanied with the “NO”.

I actually close these pages and avoid those blogs in the future every time I can. There is no way I’m giving my email to someone who is most likely going to spam the heck out of me.

 

I prefer simple CTAs at the end of blog posts, or even within content when appropriate. At least, I know I wanted to sign up for a newsletter if I’ve read enough to reach the end of the article.

 

That should be your strategy as well. You want your email list subscriber to do it with a happy face rather than because they couldn’t see the “X” button on your welcoming mat.

 

Quick note: subscribers tend to unsubscribe just as fast as they receive the first email that they didn’t want to receive in the first place.

Technique #5: Promote Your Landing Page Elsewhere

Most of the time when you are building links to your blog, you focus on linking to the homepage or to relevant blog posts.

 

Nothing wrong with link building that way, but you are missing out on a huge opportunity for more email signups.

 

Instead of negotiating for do-follow links on your guest post, spend more time negotiating a relevant Call-to-Action that’ll get you more subscribers.

 

As long as it is value-focused and value delivered, you won’t have any problems getting more blog subscribers.

 

You need to be careful, though. Make sure that the blogs you are negotiating with all have great content, engaging readers, and definitely aren’t spamming the internet.

 

Also, there is no point in trying this with your direct competitors. Related blogs are easier to convince than a blog with the exact same audience as yours.

 

With this technique, you are not only getting a quality backlink, relevant referral traffic to your blog, but also gaining subscribers along the way.

 

It doesn’t hurt to reciprocate also. If both blogs have something valuable to offer to each other’s audiences, then by all means! Remember that your audience comes to you for value first.

 

It doesn’t matter how you deliver that value as long as they learn and come back for more.

Conclusion

These 5 techniques will help secure a good number of daily subscribers. Ranking #1 on Google is good and appreciated, but if you can’t convert visitors into leads and loyal customers, you are doing it wrong.

 

In a world where most of the information is free and available to everyone who knows how to look for it, think value first, selling later.

 

Most of the time, you will grow your list of blog subscribers just by publishing frequent high-quality content. Of course, never forget about a clear CTA at the end of every article.

 

At some point in their 30-minute session, a visitor will be inclined to subscribe for more.

    You mentioned some great techniques here but the one I think at the moment is “hot” is the third one. Right now all facebook groups are so, so active with bloggers. You can easily go out there, network with as many people as you want, give them free ebooks and get subscribers.

      You are right. Facebook groups (and other forums as well) are a great source. I have been able to network with many bloggers that way, reached a new audience, and have grown my subscriber’s list with just one offer. However, value is the currency there, especially if the admins having strict rules.

      And considering that Mark is potentially going to end pages’ organic reach (according to his latest post), I think groups will be even more powerful.

        Great tips mentioned here. Email list is undoubtedly a goldmine for many bloggers and affiliate marketers.

        The thing is you need to figure out ways to monetize an email list. Building and growing an email list – these are two segments of building a profitable list. Unfortunately, most people focus only on building lists and forget the second part of monetizing it.

        That’s where email sequences come into play where you can nurture your audience to make more sales.

          You are right. Building the list isn’t the end, but that’s just the beginning. You need to make sure you have the right people on the list, and figure out how you turn that list into profit.

          There is no point in having thousands of people on a list and not monetizing it, unless that is the point of your list, of course.

          You need to set different goals for an email list. A couple of them have to do with how to grow it, and others have to do ith monetizing it.

          Just throwing in a couple of ideas out there:
          – Affiliate products/courses/services
          – Your own products/courses/services
          – Advertising other blogs
          – Organizing events

          These are a few of many, which definitely are worthy of a full article about them.

      Yes, you are right. Organic traffic will help you get more subscribers for sure. You need to work on your SEO to get your content to rank as high as possible on the search engine result pages (SERPs). There are many techniques you to do that, and I’m sure Janice has written about some of them too.

      Hi Divya,

      Yes, you definitely need some plugins to help you out. In my case, I was using MailerLite to build my list. You can use Sumo, or any other plugin, and link them to your list builder. You can use MailChimp or MailerLite and grow your email list there.

      I’d be careful not to overuse plugins though. Many list builders can easily integrate with the website just by copying and pasting a piece of code into your theme, or in the middle of your posts. It doesn’t even require any technical skills to do so. Just basic Copy Paste.

      Hi LadyE,

      That’s a great question. And honestly, there is no one right answer. I would advise an 80/20. By that I mean, 80 percent of the time you should be sending just quick and helpful tips without any attempt for marketing. 20 percent of your emails can then be used to market and even include affiliate links.

      There are many reasons for such an approach:
      1. You won’t annoy your audience with marketing emails, but they will definitely enjoy free quality content that helps them and solves their problem.
      2. You will discover which subject lines do best, the best time to send for a good open rate, and even try asking some questions to find a good response rate.
      3. Your marketing emails will be considered additional tips that help your audience instead of being considered simple advertising.

    Excellent tips Youness. I dig the one about sending valuable emails because it is a backend approach few folks pay attention to. Most bloggers ignore the fact that rocking emails will promote themselves through word of mouth marketing. I doubled down in this regard last week, adding in-depth blogging tips to my emails, and internet marketing icon David Boozer noted on my Facebook wall how my emails had really been rocking. Awesome endorsement that catches people’s eyes and goads them to sign up for my list.

      You are right. Many forget that the main reason someone subscribes to an email list is to get more value. Many bloggers promise “exclusive” content, only to send out hundreds of emails about products they are promoting. I, too, try to give more tips to my email list than what I publish on my blog. I often ask my list to send their questions and I respond whenever I can. It helps me find out pain points that my audience is trying to fix, and then I can write a good guide to solving those problems.

    I wonder how one can make people comment on their blog – an active discussion…my visitors seem to be rather shy;)

      Hi LadyF,
      I was actually just asked that question on Quora recently!

      Here was my answer:

      Write about something timely. I saw #NetNeutrality was trending on Twitter. It was content relevant to my niche so I blogged about it and ended the post by asking people what they thought of it.

      End every post by asking readers a question. Tell them to put the answer in the comments section. Try to word this “Call to Action” differently each time so you sound genuinely interested and not just pasting a CTA from another article.

      Some bloggers will ask 3 questions: 1 in the intro, 1 in the body and 1 at the end. I once had a question at the beginning and someone answered it in the comments. If people don’t get to the bottom to read the whole article, they may go down just to respond to the question at the beginning.
      I’ve been starting with questions often lately. They make great hooks and they instantly engage your reader.

      4. Make sure when people do comment, you reply. I know it takes time, but if they think they won’t get a response, they won’t leave a comment.

    Hi Youness and Janice – Do having push notifications take away from blog subscribers? I’ve noticed since I’ve used them which they do draw lots of traffic my email sign ups have not increased. They have remained the same 🙁
    Your post here made me think of that and wonder, does one cause the other to go down?

      Hi Lisa,

      Interesting question, indeed. Unfortunately, I don’t have any concrete data to support my argument, so consider it only as an opinion.

      I am not a fan of Push Notifications, and I almost always block them when I see them pop up. Reasonably, I’m assuming that if a visitor considers the push notification a good enough “action” to stay updated on your blog, they won’t subscribe. Not only that, but there is a chance they may not even check their emails for more content. That’s why I have yet to use Push Notifications on any of the websites I manage.

      The data that I have seen circulating about Push Notifications speaks only about more blog visitors, longer time on page, and maybe increase in sales. I haven’t read anything that links them to blog subscribers.

      So, I would say that it isn’t surprising that your subscriber number haven’t got up, and I’d be more worried that they would go down.

      Again, if I were a visitor who just allowed push notifications, I’d be thinking: “why would I subscribe to the same thing twice?”. The answer is no, I won’t subscribe, UNLESS, it is 100 percent worth it.

      And here comes technique N2. It should be clear to your audience that what they get in the emails is far more valuable than what they will read about on the blog.

        Youness yes – but according to Neil Patel it should not effect the email sign-ups – emails should be different than blog posts and provide other information. They should have some unique content that is valuable to readers. I am making mine more unique for that reason as time goes on and adding more value. I will be testing along the way too.     Great tips and I have been focusing more on providing more in-depth high-quality content. I’ve also increased my blog schedule from 2x per week to 3x per week. Just by adding that extra blog post every week, I’ve noticed an increase in my email subscribers.

    I’ve had challenges building my email list, but it’s definitely nice to see it growing.

    It does take time to start seeing results from a blog. However, just keep at it testing different strategies to see what works for your blog.

    I’ve definitely noticed that what works for others, doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for my blog. That’s why I am always testing new ways to drive traffic to my blog and grow my email list.

    Those are some of the practical tips to increase blog subscribers.

    Of course you can never compromise on the quality of the content – without high quality, top notch content, it is not only impossible to gain subscribers, but it is actually tough to even gather the attention of your readers. Because there is so much stuff out there. And there are numerous other places where people can find high quality information on any topic!

    And yes, linking to homepage is opportunity wasted for sure.
