Best Web Hosting Sites:

How Do Hosting Providers Affect SEO Rankings?

by Bill Brown

The importance of using the services of a reliable hosting company can never be overemphasized. A good hosting provider will guarantee you a top spot in the search engines or boost your rankings while a bad hosting provider can damage your reputation in the search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.

Online marketplaces are growing at an astronomical pace and many organizations want to see their sites on the top pages of the search engines. If your company doesn’t appear on the first page of Google, it may not necessarily get noticed by potential clients or visitors, and many people will believe you are not a serious business person.

In this article, we are going to look at how hosting providers affect search engine optimization rankings. Here are the details:

Loading Speed and Search Engines

Responsive, quick websites are more likely to appear on the first page of Google than sluggish ones, and this really makes lots of sense. There are lots of analytics that can give you details of how your site performs such as Alexa, and Google webmaster tool.

You can use them to check the ranking of your site even without paying for any advanced metrics. Several factors can slow down your site, such as poorly designed, CSS, oversized photos, HTML etc.

If you want your site to get lots of traffic, and get noticed by potential clients, don’t go for cheap hosting options like shared servers, virtual private servers (VPS), instead, go for a dedicated server- although it is expensive, it will generate wonderful results for you.

[Host Blogger’s Comment: SEO expert Robin Khokar agrees that choosing a host could affect your SEO since the speed of your host could be slower than the loading time of other hosts.]

Avoid shared hosting

Shared hosting has been a serious issue among search engine optimization experts. Unfortunately, most sites and bloggers opt for shared hosting, probably because it is affordable, but this is not the best for them.

Sharing with questionable sites will have a negative influence on the credibility of your site. All we are saying here is that before you kick-start a hosting contract, make sure you do your homework and always sign up with a reliable, credible ISP.

Server Uptime/ Downtime

Server uptime/ downtime is the truest test of a website host. If your website frequently suffers from a web server downtime, it is a sign that you are using a nonreliable website host.

Downtime will affect the performance of your website by bringing down its SEO and SERP.

If a website is down, it won’t display on the search engines. Thus, the best way to get 99.9% uptime and zero downtime is by going for a reliable, proficient web hosting company for your website or blog.

Select local hosting to target local audience

The location of your server plays a unique role in providing swift browsing experiences for your visitors. If your server location is close to your visitors, it will lead to faster redirection of your target audience to your site.

Thus, it is important that every website owner should know the roles played by web hosting companies to the growth of their sites. For example, a Canada-based local web host is most likely to fetch relevant traffic and good search engine optimization rankings compared to if the server is based outside Canada.

Selecting a local host will make it extremely easy for you to target audience and overall enhance your search engine rankings. If the server location is close to the visitors, it will fetch data as quickly as possible. Also, the download speed will be faster compared to if the server is millions of miles away from its location.

Set up Geo-Targeting in Google’s Search Console Tool

Geo-targeting is a great tool from Google and other search engines; the beauty of it is that it helps in targeting your audiences irrespective of where they are located.

If your site or blog has the following domain names like .uk, .co, .au, then there is no point getting worried about targeting the relevant audiences because it will do so automatically without much effort from you. But if your domain name has.com, then you should identify the location you want to target in the Search Console.

Server Location

Google says that the geographical location of your server affects your search engine optimization rankings. This is why it appoints countries to your website or blog based on the geographic location of your hosting server.

In areas where your server is located, you will rank high in those places. Thus, the solution is to make an effort to choose one of the best web hosting sites, a reliable hosting provider, it will surely boost your rankings.

Not what I had in mind when I read the headline. I thought you were gonna share a list of best hosting providers but thanks for sharing.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Ntokozo,
The guest author recommended Blue Host. Since I did not know if he is an affiliate of Blue Host, and it’s the law I need to disclose if the post contains affiliate links, I took it out.

  2. Enstine Muki

    Hey Bill,

    Welcome to Janice’s home.

I had a bucket of problems when my blog was on Hostgator’s shared servers. As my traffic grew, the problems increased. I was losing visitors and money because of slow site speed and constant errors. I moved to dedicated WordPress hosting and since then, things have been different.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Enstine,
I’m sorry you had those difficult experiences. Thanks for sharing them here and telling us what ultimately worked to solve them.
      Janice

  3. Smart Blogger

Exactly once! The most ideal is virtual private servers (VPS), even though we all know that it is expensive.

Thank you for sharing this useful article.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Smart Blogger,
Thanks for writing and telling us your opinion. I think these comments will be as informative as the article!
      Janice

  4. Gaurav Kumar

You are right about web hosting server location. I have discovered this back in 2014, when some of my sites ranked high in Europe because they were on European servers. Thanks for the tips!

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Gaurav,
Thanks for commenting on my Web Host article. How fortunate for you! How fortunate for others who get higher rankings as a result of location. Thanks for commenting.
      Janice

  5. Shahla Banu

A website that is hosted on a bad host is destined to become a disaster and all the aforementioned reasons are enough to make the statement a bitter truth. Thanks for haring this valuable cotents

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Shahla,
Thanks for commenting on my article. My tech helper is encouraging me to leave my host. Which host do you use? Would you recommend them?
      Janice

  6. Pamela

I don’t understand what is meant by “shared hosting”? I’m with InMotionHosting but I can’t say that I’m impressed.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Pamela,
Thanks for commenting. I’m sorry you were disappointed with my guest author’s article. I did write Bill to tell him you have a question. In the meantime, I looked it up for you. I didn’t know either.
Shared hosting is Web hosting in which the service provider serves pages for multiple Web sites, each having its own Internet domain name, from a single Web server. Most Web hosting companies provide shared hosting.
      Janice

      • Pamela

I wasn’t saying that I was disappointed with your guest host’s article. I’m not impressed with the hosting company I’m using because it seems like ever since I signed up with my new hosting service, Jetpack is constantly sending me e-mails stating that my website hasn’t loaded. It normally resumes after a few minutes but I don’t recall ever having this problem when I was hosted solely by WordPress.

        • Janice Wald

          Hi Pamela,
I am so sorry I misunderstood. Hey, not everyone will like my articles; that’s to be expected when you put yourself on the internet. However, it was kind of you to write back so that I didn’t think you were one of them.
          1. I do have a tech guy who’s pretty good although he’s getting married in a month and busy now, but in the future if you want his email, let me know.
          2. I agree when we were hosted by WordPress.com, many things were easier.
Thanks again for writing back and clearing up my confusion.
          Janice

  7. Yusuf Bitrus

    Hi Janice,

I see Shared Hosting has a lower price and one can add up to three sites to run under it though it depends on web hosting companies capabilities.

People misuse the power of shared Hosting by using and running upt 3 website together thats why they continue to complain where only one can be okay.

Most of them are not techy savvy, they go on installing just any plugin that works (I was a victim)

I have been recommending Shared Hosting most of my visitors and genuinely to my clients and no hiccups with my decisions.

The simple truth is that, shared Hosting From a company like Namchep is just the best and right one to go for. and not meant for running 3 websites at a go.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Yusef,
Thank you for defining “Shared Hosting” for my reader and myself. I did not realize “Shared Hosting” was such a controversial issue. Understandably it’s cheaper if it’s shared and not a private server. It’s a shame it’s misused.
      Janice

Your choice of web host can either make or mare your site. You need to consider the volume of content on your site, cost, the reputation of the hosting company, loading time, and a host of other criteria before deciding on a hosting company to host your website.

    • Janice Wald

      Hi Bright,

To know the best hosting for you, you should open a ticket with them and ask for trial. Most of them will be ready to give up the trial as long as you don’t misuse it.
