8 Best Link Building Strategies in SEO for 2018

by Varun Sharma

Do you think link building is dead? Are you not taking link building strategies seriously?

Well, you are not alone as many search engine optimization experts believe that link building is not effective anymore like it was before and even stuck to various backlink myths and misconceptions.

Yeah, being a backlink builder doesn’t yield results, BUT ONLY when you fail to create effective link building strategies. Link building is dead for those who fail to adapt the ever-changing instructions and increased stress on skills, details, and tools.

In other words, how can you expect results from poorly created or manipulative link building?

Link building hasn’t been considered obsolete by Google yet. In fact, it is still one of the effective methods to get ranking in SERPs. Still not convinced?

Here is an eye-opening excerpt from Andrey Lipattsey, a Search Quality Senior Strategist at Google, who reveals that links and content are two important ranking factors.

“I can tell you what they are. It is content. And it’s links pointing to your site.”

Stone Temple found in its 2017 case study that links are still a powerful ranking factor and will continue to be for the years to come.

However, Google only considers relevant and natural link building when coupled with great and informative content. There is a big catch-all: links are not created equally. It is not an easy thing to do as you assume. Therefore, you should be careful while creating a link building campaign.

Here are some effective backlink builder strategies that yield results (if done in a right way).

Article Contributions to Relevant Sites:

Article contribution is a great way to get quality backlinks from other websites. Make sure to choose good and relevant websites which are related to your industry or business in order to get a free backlink. It also requires you to provide quality and informative content that relate to the target audience. Besides placing your link in author-bio section, look across the article for a “natural” linking.

So if your content is valuable and published on a reputed website, you have great chances to get traffic to your site as well as quality incoming links.

Get Benefits from Broken Links:

Many websites show error page like 404 whenever users click on some links. It may be a frustration for the users, but can be a powerful opportunity for webmasters to build their link over there.

The key is here to get the broken link replaced with a link to your webpage.

All you need to approach the websites with the error pages. And it’s a win-win situation for both parties. You get a link while the website gets a help to fix their page. It also benefits the readers as they get access to the relevant page, instead of seeing an error page.

There are many tools to locate these “dead links” across the web like Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and Xenu Link Sleuth.

Writing Testimonials and Reviews:

Like the broken link method, testimonial link building is beneficial for both you and the website you drop your reviews at. Many businesses invite users to provide feedback on their products. It’s an opportunity for you to get a backlink and potential traffic from that website. The links are likely to be approved more quickly than your standard link request e-mails. However, your reviews should look genuine and “natural”, rather than an intention to place the link.

Don’t Forget Blog Commenting:

Blog commenting is still an efficient link building strategy. You should choose the forum or blog that is relevant to your business. Make sure the blogs have good traffic and engagement as well. Also, look to see if they have a significant amount of active commenting users already.

Make sure your comment provide substantial value to the discussion. Then, you can think about strategic placement of the link in your comments. But you shouldn’t overdo this by placing commercial keywords in the anchor texts.

Publishing Interviews:

One of the most overlooked and under-utilized link building methods: This one is a smart strategy to get high quality and editorially given backlinks to your website.

By publishing an influencer’s interview like Rand Fishkin of Moz, on your website, you can make your website look authentic and also provide useful information from the expert side. And it will create a great chance of converting into social shares and backlinks.

Luckily, industry experts like Neil Patel, Jason Acidre and Brian Dean are always available for interviews. Send them your questions via e-mail and then publish the answers. It’s simple like that!

Turning Your Mentions into Link Building:

Look for “your brand mentions” across the web which hasn’t been linked yet. In simple words, you need to find “your brand mentions” without links and turn them into links. There are many useful tools like Freshwebexplorer.com to find the sites mentioning your brands.

Ahrefs Alerts is a useful tool to find mentions on the web. It crawls the web, blogs, forums and other content on the web, and is claimed to provide 90% more mentions than other tools. As an added bonus, this tool is able to track mentions even in real time, meaning that you can be notified whenever a new website mentions you.

Once you have found those sites, approach their admin and tell them to link the mention to your website.

Video Sharing for Links:

Sharing your videos will not only get you backlinks but also add to your brand presence thus increasing your visibility. There are many ways you can get backlinks with videos.

    • Create the video and submit it to video sharing websites like YouTube, Vimeo, Viddler, and TeacherTube.
    • Comment on other videos.
  • Create your profiles on video sites.

Make sure to use high-quality videos being equipped with relevant keywords, eye-catching titles, and comprehensive descriptions.

Share Infographics:

An infographic is a simple yet efficient way to serve visual information. Above all, a quality infographic helps you build backlinks and boosts your site’s visibility. Apart from publishing it on your website, share it via social media, infographic submission directories, and email marketing.

An informative and comprehensive infographic fetches good feedback and will earn you a new link if it is shared in the right way.

Bottom Line:

With the help of these backlink builder strategies, you can make the most of your inbound links. But this is not the only thing to do. You should monitor your backlink profile constantly and remove all the spammy links that might have been generated in the past due to poor search engine optimization practices. But one thing is for sure—sticking with positive [best practices] link building strategies will benefit you sooner or later and your search engine rankings will improve.

Blog commenting is one of those powerhouse strategies any blogger can use to make friends and build links, if they place emphasis on adding value through comments. Digging these tips Varun.

I comment with an impact in mind. No need to rush from blog to blog with 1 line jobs. At least write a few paragraphs in most cases to share your thoughts, to add value to posts and to make the sort of impression that allows you to become memorable. I always remember bloggers who post mindful comments to my blog and if they can write, they will likely get featured on my blog down the road.

      Hello Ryan,

I totally agree with you. Blog commenting is not merely the thing of getting backlink. You need to get into the discussion and say something which actually makes an impact on the people only then you will be considered as an expert of the point. Else that only the way of making spam things which can cause the moderator ban us from commenting.

        Hi Varun,

Great ideas on link building. I myself build a ton of quality links to my site and link building has been one of the biggest weapons for me to grow my search traffic and sales.

Personally, I’d always go for blog commenting (though they are of nofollow but I still prefer them for diversity in backlink profile) and guest posting on top sites.

They always work like a charm for me. Apart from that, I also reach out to other sites and owners whenever someone drops my name or site’s name without including a link. Brand mentions are great to build links!

I’m a huge fan of blog commenting. It’s a great way to network with other bloggers, build links, and get traffic. Via blog commenting, I’ve been able to get a couple of guest posting opportunities.

Also, thanks for the Freshwebexplorer.com tip. Will definitely check it out.

    Hi Varun,

I Iove the tips you presented for building backlinks to your website. Testimonials and reviews are a win win strategy that benefits both parties. Blog commenting is a remarkable strategy for building backlinks, not only backlinks but also relationships with others in your niche, which is fascinating.

In fact, the blogging friends I have today are via blog commenting, and have enjoyed the benefits of backlinking via their sites. So, I would say it is my #1 linking strategy.

    Thanks for sharing!

      Hello Moss,

I am glad you liked the article. I personally liked the interview publishing strategy, this not only help you to get backlink from that person but can also help you get a chance to have a conversation with great digital marketers or any influencer in any dedicated field.

        Hi Varun,

As you said, interviews are great too for building links as well as relationship building.

They work like a charm if you’ve the RIGHT kind of topic to do interview with the influencers in your niche. Also always make sure to do a thorough research on Google about the topics to ask unique questions with the interviewer (so your audience will thank you for it).

Besides, doing interviews with experts immediately brings more traffic when they share your stuff, by also mentioning other bloggers within your interview posts (and reaching out to them via email) can help you get links and more social shares in the long run.

        Great idea!

        • Varun Sharma | at 10:28 pm

I really like the interview suggestion. What could it hurt to send an email with a few questions? Nothing. Hopefully they will find the questions interesting enough to spark their curiosity. I’m going to try sending some out. I’m curious how the answers will agree or differ from one another.

  7. Susan Velez | at 2:31 am

    Hi Varun,

Great tips and while I don’t focus on building backlinks. I do some of these things to help me get my blog noticed and build online friendships.

I make it a point to comment on other blogger’s blogs not for the backlink. I have found it to be one of the best ways to get noticed by other bloggers and build friendships online.

We’ve all heard the importance of building relationships. Blog commenting makes it so easy to start building those relationships. Just by taking the time to comment and share other bloggers content, I have been able to open the doors for guest posting opportunities.

I have met some amazing bloggers that I wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t taken the time to comment.

That’s why I love taking the time to comment. It’s great for building relationships and who knows it may even lead to other things. If not at least you’re still getting the benefit of traffic from your comment.

Just make sure that when you do comment, it adds value to the blogger. Otherwise, you’re just wasting your time because your comment will not be published.

Thanks for sharing these tips with us.

    Have a great day 🙂

      Hello Susan,

I totally agree with your point that we should post such comments which are beneficial for the other person.

And yes, blog commenting not only help us to build relationship with like-minded people but can help us to get relevant traffic to our blog page or website as well.

  8. JoeHx | at 9:44 am

Blog commenting is one of the easiest ways to get backlinks, but also can be difficult to “provide substantial value to the discussion.” It’s tempting just to drop an “awesome post!” comment and move on to the next blog or post.

What I try to do to provide value is repeat certain keywords that was in the post – “backlink” is and example for this blog post – and expand or reword something. It feels awkward at first, but eventually it feels more natural.

      Hi Joe,
That’s really nice of you. Google shows our posts to people based on our keywords. You make sure Google’s bots see them by putting them in the comments?! Many wouldn’t know to do this or it wouldn’t occur to them. Thank you! Thanks for writing to tell me. It actually never occurred to me but now it will when I comment.

        • Janice Wald | at 5:32 pm

          Hi Safraz,
Thanks for writing back and answering my question. I don’t want to spend my blogging income on that when I can use Canva and other free tools to make infographics. I will keep Fiverr in mind should I ever reconsider.

  9. Daniels | at 1:22 pm
