Beginners Guide: Golden Globe Nominations – Comedy

By: | December 14, 2014 | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Last night I gave myself a challenge, not an Ultra Blog Challenge like I’ve undertaken on Facebook, but a Golden Globe Challenge.  I dared myself (can I do that?) to critique award choices for movies I’ve never seen and television shows I’ve barely, if ever watched. (See Beginners Guide: Golden Globe Nominations – Drama   I divided the categories, and today I bring you the comedies.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Into the Woods: I was not a fan of Emily Blunt in Devil Wears Prada like the rest of the world, but I’ve been a huge fan of hers ever since due to her more likeable roles.  I’m excited to hear her sing in the role for which she’s nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, the part of an infertile baker’s wife who longs for a child.

No stranger to a musical, Meryl Streep has a strong singing voice as viewers know from her Momma Mia days.  It is a little-known fact she was actually tapped to play Evita‘s title character until Madonna got the part.  Meryl is that strong a singer.  With her acting chops and her history of success at awards shows, she could take the Best Supporting Actress Award for which she’s nominated.

I am beyond excited that Into the Woods itself is nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.  Perhaps the musical as a movie genre is not dead after all.  After being disappointed in this year’s Jersey Boys, I feared it was.  The music by Sondheim and message, Be Careful What You Wish For alone could make this film a winner.

Michael Keaton: I didn’t see Birdman, the movie he is nominated in for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.  Actually, I never even heard of Birdman until the awards were announced.  However, I recently saw Keaton in The Need for Speed, a film in which he plays an underground radio announcer.  The movie was a sleeper, but Keaton’s performance stole the film.  Although his part was small, it was obvious the former Batman star can act!

Louie: I don’t get Louie C. K. I don’t get his humor, I don’t get the show.  I just don’t get it.  I watched one episode about religion.  I don’t even remember him in it.  Was he that forgettable?  However, on a recent Saturday Night Live stint he was more than funny–he was believable.  Louie C. K. is nominated for Best Actor in this category.

Orange is the New Black: How dare they take it off the air so they can make new episodes!  Don’t they know I need my fix?  My Crazy Eyes fix, and my fix of all the other wonderful, off-beat characters.  I root for Piper while I am waiting for karma to strike her ex-fiance and her ex-best friend.  I am rooting for the show although it was denied any wins at the Emmy Awards, and I am rooting for Taylor Schilling for Best Actress and Uzo Aduba for Best Supporting Actress although the latter was sorely underused this past season.  P.S.  It has a catchy theme song.

Readers, what do you think?  Are my opinions accurate or do you disagree?  I look forward to your views.

    1. I’m so excited about ‘Into the Woods’!! I hope it is everything and more.
    2. I love Louie and Louis CK. I get how many people don’t. I’m actually excited (and surprised) that he is nominated for best actor.
    3. Madonna as Evita still breaks my heart to this day.

I’m so glad we are following each other. We have a lot in common, even movie preferences it sounds like. You might inspire me to take a WordPress course like you did. Can I ask a question though? In your post you said that you’ve been blogging six month so you have 1/16 knowledge. I didn’t understand what you meant. Can you explain? Thanks. You have such an impressive blog. I can see by the amount of comments you get that you have a strong following.

PS I’m sitting here staring at the stats like you did, but I have to go lesson plan.

I tried to figure out how much of an expert I was mathematical. So I decided I was about 1/16 of an expert . It is a pretty low number, but I’m not much of an expert yet. 🙂

The WP courses are great and you can meet a lot of supportive bloggers. I like you work at your own pace. Thanks again.

Yes. And you can do as much or as little as you choose. I did Blogging 101 about a month after I started. I think it’s the only reason I’m still blogging. It helps you understand all the ins and outs of basic blogging.

I like the idea of meeting new bloggers. Maybe I’ll look into it when I’m home over Xmas break. Thanks for sending me the information.

I’m really looking for increasing blog traffic ideas, but I saw they have that course.

Do you have any tips that worked for you?

I haven’t seen a single one of those you mentioned, so cannot comment on their worthiness. There has to be more comedies in the category!

I said in my post that I only addressed the ones I had knowledge about (at least I thought I did–I wrote about the dramas two days ago, so maybe I said it in that post LOL. At any rate, you ask, you shall receive! Here is the link to all the nominees. Thank you for reading what I wrote and taking the time to write to me.
PS Someone suggested I become an entertainment blogger yesterday! I don’t think I will specialize. I like airing my “Reflections” about all sorts of things :).

I actually haven’t seen any of the ones you mentioned, but they sound interesting!

Into the Woods comes out Xmas Day so there’s time! Thanks for the nice comments.

Hi Janice, I also see no follow button on your site, but it might be because I’m on the mobile site. I’ll check the iPad site later. There is also a widget on the side of my blog on the desktop or iPad site to allow you to follow me!
